Technology can transform our country-Mukesh Ambani

TIndia, a nation of a billion people, is well on the way to becoming one of the three largest economies of the world. But there is another reality. India’s average gross national income per capita at $750 is nearly 20 per cent lower than that across all 53 African nations.

There is, therefore an urgent need to bridge the chasm between India’s potential and its realisation. This is important not only for India; it is equally critical for the world. An Indian transformation will be the forerunner of a fundamental global change in terms of reducing regional disparity and, also, in transforming the quality of life of the people all over because one out of every six human beings on this planet lives in this country.
To realise this vision, India must do several things on a priority basis. However, on top of my agenda is the need to integrate technology with every aspect of our economy and make it a major tool of addressing our social problems.

Global economic superpowers are technology leaders. About 28 per cent of the GDP of USA is contributed by technology sectors. Extensive use of technology can bring about transformation in several spheres in India also. For example, technology can help improve agricultural productivity significantly. I am convinced that agriculture has the potential to re-emerge as a strong engine of economic growth and social development. Farmers in India are subject to the highest risks in the economy.
They face climatic uncertainties, have no dependable assurances about off-take of their output, get poor prices for produce, are subject to market manipulation, have to do with poor availability and poor quality of inputs and, above all, pay among the highest costs for private financing. Unfortunately, they have to follow a model based on low value crops, low investments, low yields and low revenues. They use resources sub-optimally, whether it is land, water, crop nutrition and crop protection. This is an irony. Because India has the highest proportion of arable land, as compared to most countries, notably USA and China. Indeed more than 30 per cent of Asia’s irrigated land is in India.
India has the potential to enhance agricultural production by over ten times. Israel produces US $5.8 million in agriculture output per square kilometre of arable land. India produces just US $88,000.

Technology can also transform Indian society. It can help atomise power to the individual level. True power lies in the ability of every individual to influence and shape his or her destiny. The world, in my view, will move from power among groups to power within an individual. Technology will bring about this transformation. Technology can enable every individual to choose, communicate, collaborate and create.
Man’s expedition to new frontiers is eternal. The quest to gain new insights is infectious. Such infective inquisitiveness can be increased by extensive education, awareness and earnings, specially by lifting those at the bottom of the pyramid. There are many frontiers barely explored — the ability to alter the form, duration and quality of life, the untapped power of the mind, the mysteries of the universe and the secrets of ocean depths. Technology can help India and Indians seek new frontiers.

India must focus on a defining set of transformational technologies. To my mind, special focus is needed in areas of modern medicine, alternate energy, networked communications, public transportation, performance materials, biotechnology, nanotechnology, robotics and automation and aerospace.
Locations of centres of innovation in the private sector, higher public spend on research and pursuit of research by leading companies will bring about greater innovation in India.
India must be an innovation powerhouse if it wishes to be a global economic power. India must place technology in the highest quadrant of her development agenda.

helping the disabled
Related to country: India

Suresh Kamath the managing director of Chennai based Laser Soft Infosystems Ltd is an unusual man. Unlike most other entrepreneurs, he does not aspire to create a business empire; his sole ambition is to provide employment to 10,000 people. He also plans to reserve 40 per cent of the jobs for the disabled.

Suresh started Laser Soft in 1986 with just Rs 200 and five people. Today, the company is a force to reckon with in the banking software arena.

In recognition of his commitment to the disabled, President of India A P J Abdul Kalam felicitated Suresh with the Best Employer award in December 2005. He also won the Best Employer award from the Tamil Nadu government. He has been awarded the NCPEDP shell Helen Keller Award for giving equal rights and gainful employment to persons with disabilities. In his own words he looks forward to -"My ambition is to create 10,000 jobs, and I want to reserve 40 per cent of that for the disabled. We also have a light top model as far as salaries are concerned. We don't give huge salaries to those who occupy the top positions but distribute the money to all the employees."

China claiming Indian territory

Arunanchal pardesh is a tiny Indian state ,part of Indian folklores dating from the times of Ramayan. It has been a regular part of Indian union -with Indian laws, democratic system and culture a part and aprcel of the daily life of the residents.
At times in past China tried to claim it for itself and then finally during Atal Bihari Vajpayee regime China recognised the state as part of India and altered its maps.In return India regconised parts of Tibet as Chinese land.both parties signed an agreement for it.
Now ChinesePresident is due to visit India with in a week and it has again claimed Arunanchal Pradesh."India has denied the claim so far.China always does this to gain some trade or political benefits. This is not good diplomacy considering the fact if both countries work together then they can achieve a Asian century.looks like China has again undergone part amensia.funnily China always recovers form this memeory lapse when Tibet issue or massacare at tinnamen sqaure is raised or when USA declines to take China's side.
hope some good sense prevails.

Polio eradication program in India

In 1988 the World Health Organisation started the Global Polio Eradication Programme. India also committed itself to eradicating polio from the country. Since 1995 the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare started intensive immunisation to eliminate the virus and in 1997 the National Polio Surveillance Project was launched in collaboration with the WHO. Today there are few who are not aware of the Pulse Polio Campaign the visible face of this programme. There are many rounds of immunisations that are held ever so often and many famous personalities lend their names and faces to the appeal that the two drops of the vaccine are necessary to save lives. It is largest-ever mass immunization campaign in the world with WHO certificate.

On the appointed dates booths are visible all over cities in India, and health workers fan into the villages. House to house mop up rounds are held soon thereafter and the campaign proceeds with a kind of military precision that is not often evident. In many ways the Pulse Polio Campaign provides evidence that the otherwise listless government machinery is capable of delivering the goods. The program has been adopted by UNO.
SO far so good. But there are soem pitfalls in this hugely popular mass scaheme. In states of UP and Bihar ,in rural areas, families have shown resistance to it as they faer their childern might become impotent after the polio drops reason -In 1970's Sanjay Gandhi started a mass male vascotomy programme that affected rural masses of this two states. So the rurls fear this scheme. In some scetions Muslims have labelled the scheme as un-Islamic.Then tehre have been rumours that the polio vaccine is actually a form of birth control and part of a western conspiracy to reduce the Muslim birth rate have led to many families shunning it in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
As a corrective action Mass idol Amitabh Bachhan, due to his fan following in UP and Bihar,Sachin Tendulakar,Shahrukh Khan have endorsed the promotional activities.Yet in these two states there have been fresh cases of Polio and the Union govt hs been forced to revise its polio eradication target.the health ministry has now roped in imams (priests) and community leaders to reach out to Muslims and assure them that the vaccine can save the lives of their children.
